Independent original character based within DC comics (but very open to MVRP) written by Sunder.❝ Everyone wants some Icarus shit. But the truth is, some holes keep going. Yawning, heady, one mistake becomes three: There's always a dark darker than the dark you know.
guidelines
▍ ❝ Minors, do not interact.
This account contains graphic depictions of intense gore, violence, harsh language, and other mature content that may not be suitable for all readers. There will not be any lewd sexual content on this account, either written in the timeline or in DMs. There is potential for other dark, triggering content such as; child loss, child sacrifice, cult rituals, cult sacrifice, and mass slaughter.▍ ❝ No lewd interactions.
I, Sunder, do not have any interest in writing detailed or graphic sexual encounters in any form, nor any form of sexual assault. There are no exceptions to this rule. I will block easily and freely to protect my curated space.▍ ❝ Metagaming ruins the fun for everyone.
Unless there's a strong basis for your character knowing of Cienn, it wouldn't make sense for them to do so. She's a naturally reclusive control freak that can disappear at will into shadows; finding her without her wanting to be found is extremely unlikely. Because of the short form nature of roleplay on a site with like 360 characters, writers often have to communicate a lot through the "narrative", but if the narrative is constantly revealing secrets about the other character and telling Sunder as the writer what Cienn cannot know, it begins to feel metagamey, especially if the information would change the dynamic between the two characters. Letting them find this out organically would provide better results.
▍ ❝ Multiverse roleplay.
Cienn will not immediately know anything about your character if we interact in a multiverse setting, unless your character is a powerful character from a long-established lore, such as Hercules or, I dunno, Napolean. Cienn may know general tidbits about very specific characters if they are from a video game franchise, but in general I find it's more entertaining to have her go in blind and learn on the way. There can be exceptions to this if another writer is more interested in roleplays around their perceived general image. In that case, reach out to me to plot such out.▍ ❝ Original content.
When I created Cienn back in 2016, aside from some general Gotham lore, I had very little knowledge about the greater DC universe. Because of this, and as a worldbuilder via D&D and novel writing, I naturally created my own lore to flesh out her backstory and explain the origins of her powers. Because of this, I operate under the assumption that Cienn's specific powerset does not obey the rules of DC's universe, however, this would never be used in a setting where she could reshape all of reality or anything huge like that, nor is she a tournament fighter in the greater MVRP setting. I will be happy to explain backstory unique to her at any point, but I hope to set up this Carrd in such a way that I can direct people here to read about her character, backstory, and abilities. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me and ask me directly.

POSITIVE ATTRIBUTES : Cienn is a hard-working, loyal friend, who will put herself in danger to protect her friends and family. She will be fiercely dedicated to those that put their lives on the line for her. She's generally cheerful despite the dire conditions of the city she was born in and she has a fiercely independent nature.❝ -
NEGATIVE ATTRIBUTES : With her dedicated nature comes and excessive and reckless sense of need to explore endlessly, turning over every loose rock and stray stick she can find. Her sense of exploration has turned to danger many, many times, and has gotten her and those around her severely injured.
❝ POWERSET: With every gift is a curse. When Cienn uses her powers to their limit, her veins turn black and she can sometimes spit up a black, tar-like substance, which is liquid shadow. If she continues to use her powers and also continues to operate under considerate emotional duress, she will eventually take on a strange form (picture far right) where shadows radiate from her body and her eyes glow, not necessarily from light, but because of all the darkness gathered around her form. This has happened twice in her history, and may repeat.
In case of extreme duress, she may leave her corporeal form entirely, becoming pure shadow for 1d4 days.
• power1 : Umbrakinesis; generation, annihilation, solidification of, and mobility through shadows.
• power2 : Dimension manipulation; the creation, shaping, and modification of dimensions such as demiplanes.
• power3 : Dimensional manipulation; the ability to warp existing dimensions so as to move through them rapidly.
Cienn gained these abilities by exploring the dyson sphere known as the Blight and unlocked them by completing challenges within the Blight. The way to ascension as Spim had envisioned it was total mastery of every element, and as his daughter, he set up the Blight to ensure that she had the tools to complete her ascension to what he called "Godhood".
Spim created obelisks with an assigned power within the Dyson Sphere. These obelisks are often obsidian temples lurking in the wasteland on the surface or just below the surface.
Despite taking on the role of her mother, Diane, Spim, as a shapeshifter, uses any pronouns, usually defaulting to the one most likely to be associated with his current appearance. Sunder will refer to Spim with he/him/his for Spim as he usually took the form of a male Cobalt Blue Tarantula.
Spim performed a series of atrocities, including but not limited to, sacrificing children, slaughtering innocent beings, and imprisoning, torturing, and siphoning power from lower demigods. When Cienn became aware of this, she swore off all allegiances to Spim and his cultists hordes and later discovered that he was keeping the Vendayin Goddess, Vaya, imprisoned. She worked with Saylin and a few other Vendayins to release her, but Spim killed Vaya and devoured her corpse, then released his culstists on Vendaya, where they wreaked mass havoc and killed hundreds of thousands of Vendayin people. The planet was deemed uninhabitable. Saylin and her people fled Vendaya and traveled through the stars, but the Magistrate Regent reminded her of her exile and told her and Cienn to return to Earth once more.Defeated and alone, Saylin once again left to travel the world, unable to face Cienn after knowing what her parent did. This was one of the main motivators for Cienn to gather together a small group of friends to travel into the Blight and destroy Spim once and for all. Spim existed in multiple universes simultaneously, and as long as he existed in one, he existed in all, making him virtually unkillable. Britney forged a sword in the Blight that could cut through dimensions. A single-use Godkiller sword. With Cienn, Vibe, Britney, and Nettle, they made their way to Spim's ziggurat and summoned him, then defeated that form. Amused by their plan, and with the usual hubris of a so-called Higher Being, he took them to his home world and introduced them to the Keeper of Worlds, where he created his final form; a terrifying Kaiju beast. It took all of them working together to finally kill Spim, and Cienn using his own power against him to annihilate him fully and end his life.
After the climactic battle ended, The Eyeless Who Yet Sees was released from his prison.
main verse timeline
▍ ❝ I.
*** CHRONOLOGICAL EVENTS: A short list of the most important chronological events in Prime Continuity Cienn's timeline.
Cienn's mother, Diane, disappeared shortly after her 4th birthday. Cienn's father, Charlie, died in an accident shortly after her 16th birthday. Shortly after his death, she discovered her ability to manipulate dimensions and demiplanes, as well as shadows. Shortly after turning 16, she discovered that she could access a wasteland planet she called the Blight. Not long after that, she had a vision of a beautiful humanoid woman on this desolate planet, in desperate need of help. She traveled there and met an alien (Vendayin) named Saylin, who told her of her people's ongoing war with a race of cultists in the wasteland that fought to destroy her and her people. Cienn was involved in a series of skirmishes alongside Saylin against these cultists, resulting in the loss of every Vendayin aside from Saylin.
The battle went so poorly that Saylin was contacted by her superiors. At her debriefing, she was convicted of breaking their laws by allowing a non-Vendaying (Cienn) to use their weapons. Appalled at their short-sightedness, Saylin was nevertheless banished to Earth. Cienn and Saylin were ordered by Vendayin High Command to remain on Earth and never try to assist the Vendayin forces yet again. Saylin vanished not long after that, determined to explore Earth and learn more about these people in her exile. Cienn blamed herself for Saylin losing her home and her people, and she began to explore the Blight.
Not long after Saylin vanished, she met a boy named Asher, who she became fast friends with. He was influenced over a period of months by Cienn's mother and her true form, that of an entity named Spim. Spim convinced Asher to turn against Cienn, and gave him the power to wield fire as a weapon against her. Asher used this newfound power to attack Cienn and burned down the house they were both living in. This gave Cienn a serious 3rd-degree burn on her back and has resulted in burn scars over her back. Asher vanished after he realized he had been manipulated by Spim, and left a deeply traumatized Cienn with a fear of fire and a fear of abandonment. She took the fight to Spim, and with the help of a medic named Daxter and some leftover Vendayin tech, they were able to destroy Spim in the Blight.▍ ❝ VI.
A portal underneath the initial Megahive in Nebraska was discovered and Cienn and Red Robin scouted through it, discovering a Xenomorph Temple and a ship of unknown origin over it. After scouting the ship, they left, then gathered a small team to go aboard the ship; Cienn, Red Robin, Red Hood, Aphelion, and Nephilim. They fought their way through countless Xenomorph hordes before they discovered an important truth; the Eyeless had been the one who had created the Xenomorphs from the start. Using the ship as a makeshift nuclear bomb, they destroyed the planet and Cienn brought them all home. After this revelation, the Eyeless Who Yet Sees sent Silas Donovan to kill Hannah and Candy Smith. Silas worked under the Eyeless in order to get his daughter, Beth, back to life.
Hallie, an alternate-timeline version of Cienn's daughter, appeared with a dire warning; becoming the Keeper of Worlds would not be enough to destroy the Eyeless. They had to destroy his power source, which was located on Xenomorph Prime (although Hallie did not initially reveal this information). Cienn, desperate to protect her friends and doubtful of her so-called daughter, still planned on setting out anyway. The Eyeless cursed her and temporally distorted Cienn, then swapped her with her 16-year-old self and brought that version of her to the present. This Cienn had no abilities whatsoever. Vibe, fearing a timeline split, forced a deal with the Eyeless; no powers for a week, for the return of Cienn to her normal self. The Eyeless agreed. A week would be more than long enough for him to enact his plans. He sent Silas after Candy, who died after two attempts, and then killed Hannah in Jason's (the Red Hood) back yard. With both obstacles out of the way, he reluctantly allowed his deal with Silas to come to fruition; the return of Beth, a category Sigma psychic metahuman. With Beth now back and Cienn young once more, the Eyeless released his bouquet; a horrifying creature with far too many eyeballs. It went to Nebraska to open a portal to Xenomorph Prime. With Beth's return, the Eyeless had been sending Xenomorphs after Silas and Beth. Hallie found them and offered her assistance; they couldn't say no, as they were already under attack by Xenomorphs. Silas contacted a Superman of another world and asked for help, then they made their way back to Nebraska to intercept and try to stop the bouquet of eyes from opening the portal. They arrived too late, and instead, were only able to slow down the portal's activation. However, with Beth's abilities, she shattered the grip the Eyeless had on both Cisco and Cienn, and returned them both back to normal.
Meanwhile, Cienn was in Detroit with Cisco and Embri just prior to them heading to Nebraska. Cienn was overwhelmed by the breadth of information and teleported (for the first time) to Gotham, where she was subsequently kidnapped by an ex-detective being controlled by a possessed mask, which told Julia (the detective) to take her down into Wonder City, a city beneath Gotham, where a Lazarus Pit resides, to sacrifice her into the pit. Cienn was rescued by Red Robin's boyfriend, Speed, from another universe, and Cienn was treated and then subsequently returned back to her normal age/self.
▍ ❝ II.
Spim eventually returned, but he was limited in what he could do. He attached himself metaphysically to the body of a long-ancient alien being calling itself Nezurac.
Cienn, blind after a confrontation with some metahuman hunters, went to the Blight and, just as she followed the vision to Saylin, followed her feelings until she ultimately arrived at a tomb. This tomb activated when she touched it, releasing Nezurac from his tomb, where he existed as a metaphysical entity that attached itself to her. He attached himself to 3 others and eventually regained his physical body; that of a 20-foot alien being. He was a scientist, and fond of humanity, but as he grew to know Cienn more he understood that she was a danger to everyone around her. Cienn and Nezurac fought against one another in the Blight some months later, where Nezurac utterly defeated her even where her powers were augmented.
Nezurac realized not long afterwards that he was being used to return Spim to full power, and was unable to stop it. Spim returned and consumed Nezurac's form for his own.
Just in case Nezurac failed, Spim was able to make contact with his cultist followers and set up a trap in the Blight for Cienn and co. Weakened from her fight with Nezurac, she went to the Blight alone, but her alternate from another world, Red, was able to open a portal to the Blight where Red, Taki, Advantage, and El went in after Cienn. They were ambushed by hundreds of monsters and El reached Cienn's location, grabbed her, and they were able to escape via portal with no permanent losses among the humans. El, a mentor figure to Cienn, broke their partnership and swore to never associate with them again.
With El spurned, her friends in danger once again at her recklessness, and Spim fully back in the flesh, as well as blind and in a wheelchair part time, everything was at a low point. Cienn made sure that she and her friends had what they needed for a future attack against Spim.
An anonymous donor provided the funds to restore her vision, and Cienn decided not to contact the same crew for an assault on Spim.
Spim turned out to be extremely difficult to kill, and Cienn had numerous encounters with Spim over the years until she, Nettle Behr, Vibe, and Britney descended into the Blight a final time and fully eradicated Spim. However, this resulted in the release of the Eyeless Who Yet Sees, an Eldritch entity of greater power than Spim.
▍ ❝ III. Just prior to fighting Spim the final time, Cienn found a cloning vat area with copies of every one of Cienn's half-siblings; the other Spimchildren. She released them, unaware that Harrison, a cannibalistic metahuman who gained the powers of those he ate, was among the throng. As soon as she left them awake, he began his machinations, and performed a sacrificial ritual simultaneous to her climactic battle with Spim. The Eyeless Who Yet Sees unleashed a horror upon the world in the form of monstrous creatures from the stars; Xenomorphs. By taking direct control of an Empress and empowering her with his own Eldritch magic, he attacked the world with his minions, while also selecting Harrison as his paragon. Cienn was attacked by a facehugger in the night and taken back to the Hive, where, as she is not wholly human, a new form of Xenomorph emerged from her. Critically wounded and on the verge of death, her future-child, Hallie, emerged from the shadows and rescued her. A healer named Embri healed Cienn of her wounds and the battle for New Jersey began, coming to an ultimate head a few thousand miles away in Nebraska, where Cienn, Advantage, Vibe, and a myriad other heroes from across the continent annihilated the Xenomorph threat, culminating in the destruction of the Hive at the same time as the Hive in Gotham was annihilated. With the threat neutralized, but the White Xenomorph that had spawned from her missing, an uneasy silence settled over her.
With the Xenomorphs rebuffed, the Eyeless empowered Harrison to find Cienn and end her; as long as Cienn was still alive, the Cult of Spim could sacrifice her in a ritual to bring back their dead god, and the Eyeless wasn't keen on being locked up again. Harrison attacked and ultimately killed Cienn, however, as her powers are tied to shadows, a portion of her spirit remained alive. This spirit found Enver York and led them to her corpse where they fought Harrison. Cienn exploded Harrison from the inside and he retreated. Cienn led Enver to a portal, where a younger version of her was stuck in a time loop. Now freed from the loop, the current Prime Cienn fused with the younger variant, who later gained Prime Cienn's memories, though still age 19 rather than 23. After a showdown with Harrison in New York, he was killed by an elementalist named Aqa, but not before the Eyeless established a portal to Earth and literally grabbed Cienn and pulled her into his domain. He eviscerated her, then found Aqa bargaining for her life. He agreed eventually to remove her ability to be used as a sacrifice to bring back Spim, then brought Cienn back to life.
His machinations were not over. Beneath the Earth, Shay Hendricks, a Spimchild with the ability to heal, was healing the same people over and over again, giving the Xenomorphs a potentially unlimited host pool to spawn from. These White Xenomorphs created a massive brood, and among their hive was Hallie, dead after a confrontation with these monsters. Cienn eventually discovered the Hive and wiped them out in retribution for what they did to her future daughter. By then, Shay had been used up and died from malnutrition.
alternate universes
▍ ❝ VERSE ONE.
Cienn Sinclair of Earth -22 with the FC of Esme Creed-Miles from the Amazon TV show Hanna. This version of Cienn was not born in Gotham, but born on another world and taken to Earth, where she was raised by the League of Shadows and directly taught by Talia al Ghul. She met prime Cienn Sinclair when Cienn went to New York and began experimenting with traveling via shadow to alternate worlds. This version of Cienn was cold, detached, and wielded both Shadow and Fire. She eventually faked her death at the hands of monstrous creatures called Xenomorphs when they invaded Earth in late August of 2023.
She has returned as of July of 2024 and is now operating largely within Bludhaven.
▍ ❝ VERSE TWO.
Addison Smith is an Elf that lives in the town of Moonbright. She is a Way of Shadow monk and Scout Rogue and helped to save the Changelings in a D&D adventure from genocidal eradication. Addy then later assisted in the detection and removal of a magic bomb on a train that would have leveled the city of Moonbright. This version of Cienn is a big AU and strictly set within the Dimension 20 universe and not something I want to RP on Twitter.
▍ ❝ VERSE THREE.
Mastodon Cienn Sinclair is very similar to Twitter continuity Cienn Sinclair, but the FC is India Eisley. The majority of the major events in her life remain the same. With the exception of the future child Hallie's death, as that was avoided in her future timeline.
